Why are some congregations consistently able to increase the financial
commitment of their members, while similar churches struggle?
The reasons are numerous and specific to every church and community, but
in ADVENT's experience a common theme emerges. Congregations
with growing giving have a vision for their future. They have moved from
a maintenance mode of ministry toward celebrating a vision of Godxs call
to the congregation. The vision provides a compass for church leaders and
enables members to glimpse the possibilities of the churchxs ministry and
mission.
The vision is specific and compelling. It stretches the dimensions of
membersx discipleship. The vision invites members to be part of something
greater than themselves and engages them in the world mission of Jesus
Christ.
The vision is rooted in the congregationxs life. Ask a member of such a
church where the church is headed, and he or she will share with
anticipation its hopes and dreams.
Churches with vision dare to risk moving in new directions. They stir a
new passion in their members, and members increase their financial
commitment to help turn vision to reality.
Conversely, churches that lack a vision consistently struggle
financially, limping along with giving at a predictable plateau. They
have not charted a clear direction for the future or provided a rationale
for how the congregation would use additional funds for ministry and
mission.
Begin the renewal of stewardship in a congregation by framing its vision.
Celebrate the vision, and invite members to become partners in turning
hopes into reality.
